Update from Kirby's new family

After leaving the FSPCA Kirby was introduced to his new home. It was so funny -he walked in, looked around and plopped himself down as if to say, "HELLO HONEY, I'M HOME"!

He met his feline sister and brother and gave them kisses and loves. Someday I'll be able to get a picture of them together. They are like dog/cat twins. It's really funny.

He had a bath and then it was up to the bus stop to get the kids off the bus. He was so excited to see them and seemed to rememeber them from the hours we had spent with them at the FSPCA prior to the adoption.

That night was Kirby's very first soccer game out at Pleasant Grove! He loved every minute of it and got so much attention from kids and parents. He soaked it up. It was such a long and busy day for Kirby that when he got home he crawled right into his brand new fluffy bed and zonked out til the alarm went off at 6:30 the next morning. I figured the first night in a new home would be much like bringing home a new baby. Maybe a little stressful and strange for him... Not at all.

A few days later he had his first check up at the Vet. He was so well behaved and so darn cute that all the girls just loved him up. He knows he's cute and it's funny to watch him love the lovin' he gets. Other than a little eye infection he was in great health! The infection has been treated and all is well.

He has been out to the Fluvanna County Senior Center for Pet Therapy. Oh my goodness, the smiles Kirby put on those ladies faces, and the chatter and converstion that started just by having an animal in the center for the day was amazing. He was so well behaved. I was so proud of him.

So many we've come across say that Kirby is the calmest, most well behaved Jack Russ they have ever met. We hear horror stories of crazy JRTs and their wild behavior and non-stop barking, digging, chewing, etc... Nope, Not King Kirby. He is just as sweet as he can be :-)

Brock goes to prison and that's great!

One of our dogs, Brock, was selected to enter the SOS Pen Pals program at the Fluvanna Correctional Center! While living at the correctional center, Brock will be trained by inmate handlers and socialized with the other dogs in training. SOS Pen Pals has placed over 4,000 dogs since the program's inception. We can't wait for Brock to complete the program and find his forever home!

Slinger's thoughts on Old Farm Day

I want to thank everyone that visited the FSPCA at Old Farm Days on Saturday! We had a grand time visiting with all the families that came out to enjoy the beautiful weather! We came back to the SPCA with full bellies, from all the treats, and full donation jars. My pals and I would like to thank everyone for their support. Our friend, Comet, was lucky enough to find his forever home at farm days. We wish Comet and his new family all the best. If you are looking to add a new addition to your family, check out our website www.fspca.org, or come visit us at the shelter in Troy.

It's time to focus on your ABCs...

...of cats! In honor of the new school year, check out 3 of our wonderful feline residents:

Alison - I am more then ready for my new home. Come to the shelter and I will call you over to my cage. Once you have opened it I will immediately come out to you so you can give me a good back scratch. I really love attention and people. I just hope that someone comes and chooses me to love soon. This place gets really boring.

Bobby - Bobby is my name and playing is my game. As you can see I was having a hard time standing still. I just wanted to investigate everything and fine some toys. I was so excited to be outside my cage that I didn't have time to take good pictures. I must admit though I am easily won over when you hold me close. I just love to purr and tell you how much you mean to me.

Cleo - I am a little shy about being at the shelter. I find it a little confusing and worrisome. Not knowing what is going to happen next, who is going to take you home. I keep telling myself that it will be okay. A nice family will come in and choose me and then I will be able to come out of my shell and show them how great of a cat I can be. Do you think you could be that family?

If you aren't able to adopt, please consider making a donation to our medical fund so we can take care of our cats. The FSPCA is a 501(c) organization so every donation is tax-deductible.

Good news from Skye!

Hi everyone. I wanted to let everyone know how excited I am to be in my new home! As the longest cat resident at the shelter, my heart would break watching my friends get adopted and go to their forever homes. But now it is my turn! I found a family that is so excited to pet me and give me a lot of love. I will miss my cat friends and the staff who have taken such good care of me but I am ready to be in a home.

Update on Lucille (now known as Ruby)

As you can see, Ruby is having the time of her life! Her mom says that Ruby is getting used to the city noise from cars, trains, trucks, and runners very quickly. She hardly turns her head at any of these but squirrels will get all four of her feet off the ground! Ruby is also learning to walk well and loves car rides in her crate.

The picture to the left shows Ruby and her "brother" and they love being together. Ruby also has a bigger and younger "boyfriend" next door who she played very well with - future play dates will occur after her spay stitches have healed for a few more days.

We are so excited to know that Ruby has found such a good home!

Celebrate the 4th with us!

Who doesn't love a parade? Come to Scottsville on Saturday, July 4th, and cheer on our parade walkers. Beginning at 10 AM, several SPCA dogs will be strutting their stuff down Main Street. They will then be hanging out at the 4PAWS store in the Food Lion shopping center. Stop by and say hello!

This is also a great time to check out 4PAWS, the FSPCA thrift store. The store has a lot of great bargains and all proceeds go to the FSPCA.

Who can resist this face?

Meet Stripe, a beagle/labrador retriever mix puppy. Born in early April, he is looking for a permanent place to call home. Come meet this cute little guy today!!!

UPDATE: Stripe has found a great home!

A great place to play!

Our dogs now have a new reason to be excited about being outside - the exercise pens! Volunteers spent the past two days cleaning out the weeds, vines and tree limbs and fixing the fences to keep our "diggers" inside the gates. The dogs are having a great time running around during their play dates.

Thanks to everyone who helped give our dogs more room to run!

Interested in being a foster?

Some of our dogs and cats (and puppies and kittens) need a little extra TLC before they're ready to be adopted. Being taken care of in a home can help them heal, get stronger, and become better socialized before being placed in an adoptive home. We are looking for both short-term and long-term foster homes. If you can help, please contact us at (434) 591-0123 or email us at director@fspca.org.

Update on Tinkerbelle

Do you remember Tinkerbelle? She was in a foster home and was adopted by a family in Connecticut. Her new family reports she is doing wonderful and did a great job at her first vet appointment (although she didn't like getting her temperature taken!). They call her Bella and already admit she rules the roost!

Here's your chance to own Louis Vitton

So it isn't a designer bag but our Louis Vitton is pure designer- chic! A sweet, tiny Siamese/ Tabby mix, he's been fostered by a wonderful volunteer. Louis has finally reached the 2 pound mark (he's a healthy 2.4 pounds!), and is ready to move on to his forever home. Louis's foster home includes an energetic dog, so he's accustomed to other pets. He's tested negative for feline leukemia, as well as negative for giardia and parasites/worms. He has received his first set of distemper/combo shots for kittens. Do you have a home for this adorably fashionable little fellow?

If you aren't able to adopt, please consider making a donation to our medical fund so we can take better care of our cats. The FSPCA is a 501(c) organization so every donation is tax-deductible. For more information, give us a call!

Meet Constance!

This beautiful little girl is a small Redbond Coonhound. She went from home to home before being surrendered to our shelter. She's a bit timid after so many moves, but warms up to affectionate attention. Just look at those intelligent golden-brown eyes! Constance has a wonderfully soft coat as well. Do you have a home for this elegant beauty?

For more information, please give us a call at (434) 591-0123 or email us at director@fspca.org.

Calling all volunteers

Are you looking to get involved with the shelter but aren't sure where to start? We could use volunteers to help with the following activities:

  • Dog Walking - Our dogs love any opportunity to get out and stretch and play! Come and take them for walks on a leash, or play fetch with them in our dog pen.

  • Cat Socialization - Who can resist affectionate, people-friendly cats? Come hang out with the kitties and play with them or let them cuddle in your lap.

  • Adoption Outings - We are able to find homes for more animals by taking them to places like PetSmart where they can be seen by lots of people. We currently do outings every Saturday from 11 AM to 3 PM at the PetSmart on 29 North near Forest Lakes.

  • Vet Visits - Our doggies and kitties need the occasional chauffeur to the vet's office during weekdays to get spayed/neutered or to get medical treatment for injuries or illnesses.

  • Fostering - Some of our dogs and cats (and puppies and kittens) need a little extra TLC before they're ready to be adopted. Being taken care of in a home can help them heal and get stronger, and become better socialized before being placed in an adoptive home.

  • Building Handyman (or handy lady!) - There are plenty of odd jobs around the building and shelter grounds that need attention. Any items that can be done by volunteers helps save the shelter from having to hire professionals to get the work done.

  • Humane Education - Help us educate school kids and other community groups about responsible pet ownership and the need to spay/neuter all pets to prevent overpopulation problems.

  • Fundraising and Event Promotions - If rubbing elbows with other folks or planning and promoting events is your cup of tea, we can always use extra help with fundraising and publicity.

  • Adoption Follow-Up - Help us check in with adopters to see how their new pets are doing and to make sure any necessary spays/neuters have been done.

If any of these interest you, please call us at (434) 591-0123 or email at director@fspca.org. Even if you only have a few hours to help, we would love to hear from you!
